How can nonprofits use media to promote their work and highlight their mission? Attend AAJA SF’s Community Access Workshop to learn about the most effective ways to connect with media organizations and get coverage, or learn how to use social media and other tools to create your own content.
The workshop runs from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm on March 29 at the Academy of Art University, 79 New Montgomery St., in San Francisco. Our sessions will cover media literacy, media access and Op-Ed writing.
8:45 a.m. – Registration and breakfastÂ
9:30 a.m. – Welcome
9:45 a.m. – Session 1:
In this session, we will provide a overview of how the media media works and what tools are available to help nonprofits get their message out to the public. This includes pitching to media outlets as well as producing content through alternative channels like social media.
10:15 a.m. – Session 2: Â
We’ve assembled a panel of experts who will explain how to pitch stories and what types of stories to pitch. Our panelists include David Steinberg, copy desk chief and Stylebook editor for the San Francisco Chronicle; Amanda Stupi, engagement producer for KQED’s Forum; and Alexa Lee, a former CNN reporter who is currently director of public relations for StartX, a technology nonprofit affiliated with Stanford University.
After the panel, KTVU Channel 2 reporters/anchors Claudine Wong and Mike Mibach will provide tips on how to speak on-air and conduct mock on-camera interviews for those who want to give it a try.
12 p.m. – Lunch break
12:30 p.m. – Practice pitch group session:
We’ll split into small groups and discuss possible story ideas and how to improve on specific pitches.
1:30 – Session 3:
Sharon Pian Chan, associate opinions editor/digital for The Seattle Times, will talk about op-ed writing. These are the articles written by individuals who are not on a publication’s editorial board. Sharon will explain how nonprofits can use this forum to promote their message in a relevant and timely manner.
Please RSVP here.
Thanks to a generous grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the event is free to all nonprofits. The day also includes a light breakfast and a lunch break. Questions? Contact Kevin Lee at eelnivek@gmail.com or Donna Tam at donnaytam@gmail.com.
